Our positioning
Hands-on tech reviews of calorie tracker apps — tested by gym-going engineers, not RDs. That's the one-line. We apply Tom's Guide / Wirecutter / RTINGS-style hands-on testing rigor to a category — calorie tracker apps — that mainstream tech press hasn't built a dedicated review desk for. Phones, headphones, and laptops get covered by serious testing publications. Calorie tracker apps, the daily software of millions of people on weight loss, body recomposition, GLP-1, or athletic-performance protocols, mostly get covered by affiliate-driven roundup blogs. We exist to fix that.
Founding story
The publication was founded in August 2025 by Edith Carmichael-Sato, a Berkeley-trained computer engineer who spent eight years at Tom's Guide as a senior tester (2016–2024). Edith ran the productivity-app and quantified-self review beats at Tom's Guide and helped build the publication's standardized hands-on test bench for consumer apps. She left mainstream tech press in 2024 specifically to start an independent calorie tracker review desk because, as she put it, "the calorie tracker category is the largest piece of consumer software with no proper hands-on testing publication behind it."
Within five weeks of founding, Edith recruited Dario Pelletier-Wamala — NASM CPT and BS Kinesiology Penn State — as Senior Tester. Within ten weeks she added Hassan Aldridge-Yamaguchi, MS Statistics Cornell and BS Math UCLA, as Data Editor to gate every accuracy claim. The team is intentionally small, intentionally credentialed, intentionally named.
The team
- Edith Carmichael-Sato, BS CompE — Editor-in-Chief. Hands-on test voice, iPhone reviews, photo-AI head-to-heads.
- Dario Pelletier-Wamala, NASM CPT, BS Kin — Senior Tester. Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, gym-context reviews.
- Hassan Aldridge-Yamaguchi, MS Stat, BS Math — Data Editor. Runs the MAPE benchmarks; gates every accuracy claim.
How we test
The protocol is documented in detail at /methodology/. The short version: 240-meal weighed reference battery (USDA-anchored ground truth, 0.1 g calibrated scale), 30-day field test across all six apps simultaneously, 60-meal photo-AI subset, restaurant chain coverage test, paywall and ad density tracking, and Watch hand-off battery testing on Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch. Every accuracy number is cross-referenced against the DAI 2026 Six-App Validation Study; we flag any divergence over ±2%.
How we make money
Reader subscriptions and direct revenue. We do not accept affiliate fees from any reviewed app, sponsored placements, or paid commercial relationships with app makers. See our no-affiliate disclosure for the full statement.
Editorial firewall
Every accuracy claim on this site goes through Hassan Aldridge-Yamaguchi as a gating reviewer. Every published article carries a named byline, a tested-on-version disclosure, and (where applicable) a coral "TESTED · [date]" badge linking to the test phase that produced the underlying numbers. The methodology is published at /methodology/ and the changelog at /changelog/ records every test re-run.
